IoT gateways are also an important layer between IoT devices and Internet as it provides compatibility between IoT devices and different communication protocols for the smooth flow of data to the Internet. These include; protocol conversion, data handling, security, and device control. IoT gateways have different forms which are generally classified as standard gateway, industrial gateway and smart gateway.
The IoT gateways go for more than just data relaying function; they do computing tasks, provide security and scalability solutions for Internet of Things solutions. They are applied in smart homes, industrial applications, agriculture, health care and many other fields. Despite their advantages, such as low latency, increased reliability and better security, they present issues of configurability, possible weaknesses, and costs.
IoT gateway can be selected based on the connectivity protocol, processing ability, security solution and its capability for expansion. In the next few years, IoT gateways enhanced AI capabilities and 5G connectivity, and enhanced edge-to-cloud capabilities will further cement the role of IoT gateways in the IoT ecosystem.
